A lot of the parents don’t know what to do if their child was choking/suffocation by choking with object or food. In a recent research conducted in the U.S., noted that more than 40 % of the parents don’t have a clue what to do.
There is a process that must be done in such cases to save the life of the child. The technique that we are presenting is called the Heimlich maneuver. It is very easy, but also it is very important to be applied in the right way.
The technique will differ if it’s done on a baby or a bigger child. When it comes to babies, the best thing to do is to put the baby on your lap, with the head a little lower than the chest and give five firm slaps on him/her back (with the hardest part of the hands), around the shoulder.
Here’s what you need to do:
- Hold the baby upside down, lying on your lap.
- Hit the back using your hands (as much as 5 times) to dislodge the food or object stuck in the respiratory system (trachea).
- If the food/object is the reason for choking, turn the baby over and use approximately 5 chest compressions.
- Continue the cycle till the food/object is out of the air passages.
You can watch the video below and it will be clearer what you need to do in a such case.
It is important that all parents know this technique. However, this is a news blog about home treatments. It does not replace a specialist. Always consult your doctor.
