Eggs are one of the real natural superfoods– they are incredibly nutritionally rich and beneficial for our health. Nevertheless, not all eggs are the same– you should know how to pick the right egg.
Luckily, there is a simple method to find out if the eggs you purchased are not expired and safe to eat.
Ever wondered what that little white string attached to your egg yolk is? If you haven’t, every egg has one but you probably just didn’t notice. True, it’s a little inconspicuous, floating around, sometimes even hiding beneath the yolk but it’s there. Some say it’s the chicken’s umbilical cord but don’t worry, it’s definitely not that.
So, what is it? It’s called chalazae and there are two of them on each side of the yolk.
The rope-like strings actually act as an anchor, ensuring the yolk stays in the center of the egg whites and they’re completely safe to eat. It’s most easily spotted when the yolks are being separated from the egg whites.
The chalazae also act as an indication of how fresh your egg is. So, the more noticeable they are the fresher your product is. The older the egg, the quicker the chalazae fade and eventually disappear.
It’s very important to know that a simple look at the inside the egg can reveal a lot about its state. Whenever we decide on eating eggs, we break them without detailed examination. However, what’s inside the egg is very important and can tell you if that particular egg is actually healthy.
If you notice a kind of fiber attached to the yolk and white, it means that the egg is fresh and safe for consumption. Every egg has an expiry date– if there’s no chalazae in yours, you probably shouldn’t eat it.
